Background of the Study
Game-based learning has emerged as a powerful approach to make education engaging and interactive, particularly in the realm of basic science education. In Katsina, Katsina State, a 3D game-based learning app is being developed to teach fundamental scientific concepts in an immersive digital environment. This app leverages interactive 3D simulations and game mechanics to present basic science topics such as physics, chemistry, and biology in a fun and engaging manner (Ibrahim, 2023). By incorporating elements such as challenges, rewards, and real-time feedback, the app motivates students to explore scientific concepts actively and reinforces learning through repetitive practice. Research has shown that game-based learning can enhance knowledge retention, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills by creating a competitive yet collaborative environment (Chinwe, 2024). The app is designed to be accessible on mobile devices, ensuring that a broad spectrum of students can benefit from interactive science education regardless of geographic or socioeconomic barriers. It also integrates adaptive learning features, personalizing the experience based on individual performance and progress. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between theoretical classroom instruction and practical application, preparing students for advanced studies and future scientific endeavors. The integration of gaming elements into basic science education not only makes learning more enjoyable but also fosters a deeper understanding of core scientific principles, thereby laying a strong foundation for lifelong learning (Afolabi, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Traditional methods of teaching basic science in Katsina often rely on lectures, textbooks, and static experiments, which may not adequately engage students or foster a deep understanding of scientific concepts (Ibrahim, 2023). This approach often results in low motivation, poor retention, and limited practical application of knowledge. While digital learning tools have been introduced in some schools, many of these tools lack interactivity and fail to incorporate engaging, game-based elements that can make learning enjoyable and effective. The absence of a comprehensive, 3D game-based learning app creates a gap in the current educational system, preventing students from fully benefiting from modern, interactive teaching methods. Additionally, technical challenges such as software compatibility, user interface design, and adaptation to local curricula hinder the effective deployment of digital educational tools (Chinwe, 2024). This study aims to address these issues by developing and implementing a 3D game-based learning app that enhances basic science education. It will evaluate the app’s impact on student engagement, understanding, and academic performance, while also identifying barriers to effective implementation. The research seeks to provide empirical evidence on the benefits of game-based learning and propose strategies for integrating such digital tools into the curriculum, thereby improving science education outcomes in Katsina.
Objectives of the Study
• To develop and implement a 3D game-based learning app for basic science education.
• To evaluate its impact on student engagement and academic performance.
• To identify challenges and propose strategies for effective integration.
Research Questions
• How does a 3D game-based learning app enhance understanding of basic science concepts?
• What improvements in student engagement and performance are observed?
• What challenges hinder effective implementation, and how can they be overcome?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it demonstrates the potential of game-based learning to transform basic science education by creating interactive and engaging digital experiences that enhance learning outcomes (Ibrahim, 2023). The findings will provide practical recommendations for educators and policymakers in Katsina, contributing to a more dynamic and effective educational environment (Chinwe, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the design, implementation, and evaluation of a 3D game-based learning app for basic science education in Katsina, Katsina State. It focuses exclusively on digital game-based approaches.
